Before a learner joins Global Autism Learning School, there's usually an initial assessment -- and many parents aren't quite sure what this actually involves or what's expected of their child.
Why an Initial Assessment Comes First
The assessment helps the team understand a learner's current skills, communication style, sensory needs and interests before a teaching plan is put together. It isn't a pass-or-fail test -- it's a starting point for planning.
What Happens During the Assessment
This generally involves observing the learner during relevant activities, a conversation with parents about developmental history and daily routines, and often some direct, relaxed interaction between the learner and a team member.
What Happens After
The findings generally help shape how initial goals and the teaching approach are set for that learner. Dr. Charu Arora and the GALS team may be involved in this process depending on the learner's specific needs.
