If your child has been referred for occupational therapy, it's natural to wonder what the first session actually involves. Here's a general idea of what to expect.
Before the Assessment
You'll usually be asked about your child's daily routines, any concerns around motor skills, sensory responses or daily tasks like dressing and eating, and relevant background such as birth history or developmental milestones.
During the Assessment
The therapist observes your child during play-based and structured activities to understand their fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing and overall coordination, rather than relying on a single test.
After the Assessment
Dr. Charu Arora, Senior Occupational Therapist, explains the observations in plain language and discusses whether ongoing therapy would help, along with realistic goals for your child.
