Most young children pick up basic number ideas -- counting, comparing more and less, recognising simple quantities -- gradually and with practice, but some children find these concepts unusually difficult well beyond what's expected for their age.

What Early Number-Sense Difficulty Can Look Like

Signs can include ongoing trouble with counting in order, difficulty recognising which group has more, trouble linking a number word to the right quantity, or needing to count on fingers long after classmates have moved on.

Why This Isn't Always Easy to Spot Early

Because number skills build gradually and vary a lot between children at this age, a genuine difficulty can be mistaken for simply needing more practice, especially before formal schooling begins.

Does struggling with numbers always mean a learning difficulty?

No -- number skills develop at different paces, and some difficulty with new concepts is normal; it's the persistence and degree of difficulty that matters.

At what age can this be assessed?

Assessment is generally more reliable once a child has had reasonable exposure to number concepts, often once they've started school, but concerns can be discussed earlier too.

Is this the same as general learning difficulty?

It can occur on its own or alongside broader learning concerns -- an assessment helps clarify what's specifically contributing to a child's difficulty.
